Are you a saver? Most people aren’t. They might contribute some to their retirement plans at work, but they don’t have money in the bank for when the refrigerator dies or the transmission goes out. Foolishly, most depend on their credit cards to take care of life’s emergencies.

It’s not that difficult to start an emergency fund. The bank or credit union where you have your household account will likely open an account for you with a very small initial deposit requirement.

Why bother if you don’t have a cent to your name to save? The reason most people fail financially is not because their incomes are too small but because their spending habits are too big. Start working on your spending habits to find the money you need to save. Then start shoveling it into your savings account. Here are six easy strategies other readers have shared for how they found money to save. Do what they do and you’ll have money in the bank, too.

1. Dump the PMI. If your mortgage is down to 80% of your home’s value, or less, you might be able to cancel that expensive lender required insurance call private mortgage insurance (PMI). Call your lender today. This could mean thousands a year in savings—money for thte bank.

2. Kiss your long-distance goodbye. If you have a long-distance plan at home cancel it. But first get a high quality prepaid long distance calling card from a discount warehouse club or other store like Wal-Mart. You’ll pay from 3 cents to 6 cents a minute (depending on the card) instead of the 15 to 20 cent a minute effective rate you’re paying now (that’s counting all the mystery fees that zing you every month).

3. Gentle wash. You spend how much on dry cleaning? Yikes! Just a small effort figuring out your gentle cycle or hand washing will let you channel that money into the bank!

4. Load up the leftovers. Don’t even tell me how much good food you throw out because it’s just easier than making the effort to it to work tomorrow for lunch. That could mean $5 a day minimum for your bank account.

5. Don’t spend coins. You’ve heard it so many times and it might sound corny, but if you refuse to spend coins, at the end of month you’ll have at least $20.. That’s an easy $240 for your savings account.

6. Get a better plan. Pick up your cell phone and call customer service. Ask: Am I on the right plan? The company doesn’t want to lose you. They know you can leave and take your number with you. If there’s a cheaper plan that will work with your pattern of usage, they’ll offer it to you. Try it! If there’s a cheaper plan you’ll have more money for the bank. You will never know just how great it feels to have money in the bank until you experience that for yourself.
