Friendly Spider
Fashion this adorable arachnid out of jet-black roving. Punch a medium-size ball with felting needles to make the flat body. Then felt a smaller ball for the head and eight skinny legs. Join the pieces by overlapping them slightly on your work surface and punching the needles through the overlap to unite the fibers. Felt small white-and-black eyeballs, and join them to the head. When finished, attach the spider to a pie-size pumpkin with straight pins.

A Head Above
For a haunting silhouette, use hot glue to cover a foam wig head with dried moss. This is “reindeer moss,” found in the floral aisle of the craft store.

Hanging Ghosts
We’ve always felt there must be another use for pleated paper cupcake cups, and finally we discovered that they make amusing ghostly spirits. Use jumbo or king-size cupcake liners. Pierce each one with at least one pair of black paper-brad eyes (use two or three pairs to see eyes from more angles). If you can’t find black brads at your craft or office-supply store, paint some brass ones with a black paint marker.

To hang them, thread a needle with monofilament or black thread, doubled and knotted, and pierce a paper liner from the inside. Pull the needle through until the liner sits on the knot. Cut the monofilament next to the needle, then tie the ends together to make a hanging loop.

The Evil Eye
Turn snappy green apples sinister with the addition of gummy eyeballs. Start with room-temperature apples (cold ones will sweat and the decorations won’t stick). Build eyeballs by starting with gummy fruit circles, then adding pupils and lash lines made from black ready-to-use fondant (a cake-decorating ingredient available at craft stores). Top them with a blob of white icing and a dark chocolate chip. Attach eyeballs to the apples using a dot of icing as glue.

Creepy Crawlers

Ingredients
1 16-ounce can vanilla frosting
1/2 teaspoon orange, cherry, lemon, almond or anise extract (optional)
3 to 3 1/2 cups powdered sugar
Desired color paste food coloring
Small cookies with white filling such as chocolate sandwich cookies, peanut butter sandwich cookies, and/or miniature multicolored vanilla wafers
Black string licorice, jellied orange slices, yellow sprinkles, small decorative candies, and/or multicolored nonpareils

Directions
1. Reserve 3 tablespoons of frosting; cover and set aside. In a medium bowl combine remaining frosting, desired extract (if using), and 2 cups powdered sugar. Knead in enough of the remaining powdered sugar to make a moderately firm claylike mixture. Divide into portions and knead in desired color food coloring. Keep mixture covered when not using.

2. Make creative creepy crawlers, using clay mixture, cookies, and assorted candies. Attach pieces with reserved frosting. Makes 3 to 4 dozen crawlers

2. Use melted chocolate and a small paintbrush to paint monster faces on the inside of clear plastic cups.
3. Refrigerate until chocolate is hardened.
4. Add green food coloring to vanilla-flavored pudding.
5. Pour into prepared cups, top with crushed chocolate sandwich cookies, and refrigerate at least one hour.

Green or purple food coloring
2x4 inch unfrosted brownie or 4-inch-diameter sugar cookie
2 mini vanilla wafers or one large marshmallow
2 black jelly beans or red hots
1 large gumball or Ju Jube candy
Black or red peel-n-pull lace candy
Candy corn (optional)
Black food coloring paste

Directions
1. Use green or purple food coloring to tint some vanilla icing. Frost the brownie or cookie with the tinted icing. Use mini wafers or cut one large marshmallow in half for eyeballs.

6 leaves leaf lettuce (optional)
6 slices cooked ham (3 ounces)

Assorted decorations such as: parsley sprigs, sweet red pepper strips, ripe olives, small pimento stuffed green olives, small pepperoncini peppers, julienned carrots, small sweet pickles, and/or shredded lettuce
Mayonnaise, salad dressing, or honey mustard
6 slices American cheese
Wooden picks
Directions
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Wrap tortillas in foil and bake for 10 minutes.

2. Spread each tortilla with 1 tablespoon mayonnaise. Lay a lettuce leaf over mayonnaise, top with a slice of ham and a slice of turkey. Roll up and secure with wooden pick. Stuff one end of rolled tortilla with sweet red pepper strips, shredded lettuce, parsley sprigs, and julienned carrots.

Scaredy Cat
More friendly than fierce, this cookie-and-candy cat is just what a wicked witch needs as a broom-riding companion.

Ingredients
2 round chocolate cookies
Canned chocolate icing
2 mint patties
2 multicolored-chip cookies
1 Sathers Cherry Sour candy
2 candy-coated chocolate candies
8 mini candy-coated chocolate candies
2 Junior Mint candies
Green jelly candy
1 Twizzlers Chocolate Twist candy strip
Red lace candy
Vanilla almond bark candy
Directions
1. Use chocolate icing to assemble the chocolate cookies for the cat's head and body. Cut each mint patty into the shape of a pointed ear. Place the ears behind the head, adhering them with icing.

2. Add the muzzle, nose, and paws, referring to the photo for placement. Use icing to hold the pieces in place. For the eyes, flatten a green jelly candy and then cut two thin diamond shapes. Use icing to attach one to each Junior Mint; attach to cat.

3. Place the Chocolate Twist on waxed paper and heat it in a microwave oven for about 8 seconds. Remove the candy and form it into a S shape for the tail. Hold in place until the candy keeps its shape. Heat the candy longer if necessary. Use icing to adhere tail to the back of the body.

4. From the red lace candy, cut four 1-1/2-inch-long whiskers and one curve for the grin. Following the package instructions, melt a dime-sized chunk of almond bark. Using a toothpick and the melted candy, adhere the ends of the whiskers and the mouth to the muzzle. Makes 1 serving

Spider in a Web
Make him happy, make him sad, or make him angry. The spider's mood depends on the frosting and candies used to decorate him.

Ingredients
Glue gun and hotmelt adhesive
18 Pixy Stix candies
Large muffin
Canned chocolate icing
Chocolate sprinkles
1 red sour ball, cut in half
2 spearmint Starlight candies
1 1-1/2-diameter peppermint patty
1 orange M&M candy
Strawberry-flavored shoe-string licorice
Black licorice twists
Clean scissors
Directions
1. For the web, hot-glue six Pixy Stix together in a spoke design. Referring to the photo, connect the spokes, gluing the remaining Pixy Stix around the outside edge first, then on the inside.

2. For the spider, cover the muffin top with chocolate icing and sprinkles. Set aside.

3. Assemble the pieces as follows. Using the icing as "glue," ice sour-ball halves to the center of the Starlight candies for eyes. Ice the eyes and an M&M nose to a peppermint-patty head. Cut the mouth from a curved portion of shoe-string licorice. Ice the head to the body, slipping the cut ends of the mouth in between.

4. Cut eight long slivers of licorice twists candy for legs and three or four short slivers for hair. Cut the ends into points. Push the legs and hair into the body.
