Only a few hours until the party? Or just handing out treats at the door? Save the holiday with quick, clever treats that witches, ghosts, and pirates will gobble with glee.

Tip of the Day:
For a spooky meal, add food coloring to scrambled eggs to concoct a gray "brain."

Create a paw-print trail
Pave the way with big cat paw prints cut from contact paper.

YOU'LL NEED • Scissors • Black marble contact paper • Orange and black spray paint • Scrap wood for sign • Painters tape

Decide how many paw prints you'll need to lead up your walk to your door. (You'll want to space them about a foot apart.) Cut out paw pads and toes from contact paper. Remove backing paper and arrange cutouts on walkway. For sign, paint entire piece of wood orange and let dry completely. Rip tape off roll, leaving edges jagged, and tape off words "cat walk." Tape a border around sign. Spray-paint entire board black and remove tape once paint is dry.

Brain Freeze
Carve a daringly realistic brain out of a honeydew melon by using an X-Acto knife or paring knife to replicate channels in the rind. Then place it in a large mixing bowl. In a second bowl mix up four 3-ounce packets of strawberry-flavored gelatin according to package directions and pour over the melon until it is fully covered. Refrigerate overnight, then scoop out the melon with a large spoon or spatula. Scrape away some of the gelatin, as shown.

Toxic Assets
Pile up some hazardous-looking cookies topped with green-tinted icing or frosting from the grocery store. Crumbled barley candy or hard candy add a crystalline touch.

Fresh and Wormy
For a tantalizingly icky treat, weave gummy worms through cookies dusted with “dirt,” which is really black sanding sugar used for decorating cookies. Use a plastic drinking straw to punch the holes.
