We have all heard that excess tummy flab is not our fault.

FACT: There is a link between everyday stress, tension and excess stubborn belly fat. High levels of the stress hormone, cortisol can cause lots of excess body fat to accumulate around your waist and tummy...creating a bulging midsection and destroying your figure. It is a health threat to an estimated 47 million Americans. The harmful combination of everyday stess, overeating, and excess cortisol...all conspires to keep us overweight, tired, and thick around the middle.

Cortisol, which has been linked to Alzheimers, causes us to crave comfort foods like chocolate cake.

To help rid your body of cortisol:
laughter
red wine
vitamin C
strawberries
grapefruit
oranges and the scent of orange
Orange juice is proven to lower levels of cortisol
whey protein
apples
10 minutes of sun
lemon balm tea
hard boiled eggs
oatmeal
brown rice
barley to clean digestive tract to eliminate waste which leads to bloating
chew gum (Big Red is a good one since its cinnamon really does neutralize the bad breath causing bacteria in ones mouth for up to 30 minutes after chewing) Be sure to chew gum with mouth closed so you don't swallow air which will bloat you.

Vitamins found in a heavily advertised pill to blast cortisol that causes stomach fat: Vitamin C , B complex, Calcium and Magnesium (A good multi-vitamin and B-150 from Wal-Mart would be good.)

Vitamin B is found in:
liver
yeast
Molasses
Brewer's Yeast
wheat germ
meat
seeds
nuts
a few vegetables
whole grain breads
cereal


Never take just one of the B vitamins by itself as it will deplete some of the other required B vitamins. (B-150 complex can be found at Wal-Mart.) B vitamins are water soluable (dissolve in water) so any B vitamins not needed in your body will be excreted in the urine.

Try to avoid:
cookies -hard to digest
carbonated drinks (soda and mineral water) Distends stomach
condiments- ketchup, soy sauce, relish which bloat


Deep breathing reduces the level of cortisol.

One of the most effective ways to get rid of excess cortisol (the stress hormone, known to promote tubby tummies) is to sleep. Snooze 7.5 hours and you will end up with 50% less cortisol than folks with 6.5 hours of sleep or less. (Sleep keeps eyes and tummys from getting puffy.) Your waistline will thank you- lowers belly fat by 50%

Drink milk at bedtime to sleep better and be significantly more alert the next day. Any variety even lactose-reduced, skim, full-fat or flavored will work.

Starch makes waistbands tight, due to the glycogen that is stored. It carries three times its own weight in water.

Avoid large portions, which cause digestive reactions to fill our tummies with air.

When you don't drink enough water, the body holds on to what it has. To release trapped fluid, sip on water.

Avoid all caffeine as it is very dehydrating and can become a vicious cycle as you drink more to try to quench the thirst it causes. (Dehydration is not something you want. Grapes, firm and smooth, when dehydrated become wrinkled raisins.


Take fish oil supplements to burn more fat from belly. Omega-3 fatty acids in the supplements become flammable during exercise, igniting fat-burning enzymes. Fish oil can help with your appetite but taking fish oil prior to walking supercharges tummy trimming power of a morning walk to get rid of spare pounds and ab faster. The more you walk the better you feel.

Drinking green tea can improve your exercise endurance by 24% because it contains chemicals called catechins, which help muscles use body fat as fuel, so you can work out longer without feeling tired.

And for even better results, walk to music. Moving makes you 30% more likely to exercise regularly

Bloating- Banish with peppermint tea or capsules. (Food isn't digested properly or imbalance of intestinal bacteria.) Licorice root help.
